To say I left the theater disappointed would be an understatement because it's rare that you get a bad film that stars Cruise. OBLIVION is a terrific film to sit back and look at but sadly the story itself is just so boring and the direction so lacking that one will be fighting a major battle just to try and stay awake. A veteran officer (Tom Cruise) and his partner (Andrea Riseborough) stay behind to keep an eye out for the remaining resources but soon he starts to question everything he's been told. Oblivion (2013) ** (out of 4) Decades after the Earth had to battle an invasion, the people there were forced to leave because the planet just wasn't able to be lived on. I'm sure Tom saw some scientology doctrine in the story which must have been what attracted him to the film. That and all the scientologists in the world. I'm sure that the legion of fans Tom Cruise will go see it. I watched Oblivion and quite frankly I thought the story and script were incoherent and the direction almost non-existent. But those things that Sigmund Freud talked about, where the Krels created monsters from in Forbidden Planet, dreams in forbidden places bring up memories now that the Earth is a forbidden planet. Like most from Titan his memory has been wiped of times before.

Cruise is a repair technician who fixes the drones that patrol the burned over Earth. The natural disasters resulting were just a prelude to the war that followed. The aliens also destroyed the moon which as we know has a great deal to do with our gravity as well as determining tides. But we've managed by the time of the middle 20th century to reach Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn. As we learn from Tom's narration at the beginning he's a survivor from Earth after an alien invasion scorched the planet leaving unfit for human habitation. I have to confess I'm a minority here since the story left me with more questions than when I started. I see that a lot of folks are happy with Tom Cruise's latest film which is his first venture into the science fiction genre since his remake of War Of The Worlds.
